Early years & family
The current work was started by a volunteer in 1995, who became aware that there was little provided locally for children too young to attend the Mission’s children’s and youth clubs, and that their parents often felt isolated and lacking support.
‘Bouncers’
‘Bouncers’ baby and toddler group was thus born, and quickly became known for its welcoming and supportive environment.
A part-time coordinator was appointed in 2002 to lead ‘Bouncers’, coinciding with funding being secured through the local Sure Start programme. A strong working partnership has been built up with Sure Start, continuing today through the nearby Collingwood Children’s Centre in Buckhurst St.
Parenting Courses
‘Bouncers’ was followed in 1999 by the first parenting course, ‘From Pram to Primary School’ run by another volunteer with a strong concern to provide support to local parents in the challenging task of parenting. This course has continued to be run regularly up to the present, along with longer parenting course and a parenting support group.
Home Visiting
Additional family support is provided by a health visitor who undertakes home visits through referrals from the Collingwood Children’s centre and other local agencies.
